Practical Allergy for Nurses/Practical Allergy for Health Visitors
Date: WEDNESDAY, 2ND MARCH 2011
This study day was held for the first time in 2009 and we have built on the successful programme for 2011. The day is designed for nurses practicing in primary or secondary care whose client group includes patients with an allergic disease, such as food allergy, asthma, allergic rhinitis or eczema. The programme relates to the practical management and support of the patient and family with an allergic condition. We are fortunate to be supported in the delivery of this study day by a number of eminent clinicians who are experts in their field, demonstrating how the multidisciplinary team can improve the care of patients with allergic disease.
Programmes for Nurses and Health Visitors will run in parallel and have been grouped into themes, allowing flexibility for delegates to choose the most appropriate session for their practice. The nurses programme includes practical sessions covering the administration of immunotherapy, skin prick and intradermal testing and the popular ‘management of an allergic reaction’ practical session.
This study day will be valuable to you if you would like to know more about this client group as it will provide an introduction to allergic disease and its management. You will gain an understanding of the basic immunology of allergy and the practical value of clinical investigations in relation to allergic disease.
The primary aims of the day are to provide:
An awareness of the appropriate clinical investigations to confirm a diagnosis.
The principles of managing a patient with allergic disease such as dietary exclusion, adrenaline auto-injector training and pharmacological management of an allergic reaction.
An understanding of the requirements of the safe environment needed for carrying out diagnostic tests and administering immunotherapy.
An introduction to drug allergy and immunotherapy.
