Practical Allergy for Nurses/Practical Allergy for Health Visitors
Date: WEDNESDAY, 2ND MARCH 2011
This study day was held for the first time in 2009 and we have built on the successful programme for 2011. The day is designed for nurses practicing in primary or secondary care whose client group includes patients with an allergic disease, such as food allergy, asthma, allergic rhinitis or eczema. The programme relates to the practical management and support of the patient and family with an allergic condition. We are fortunate to be supported in the delivery of this study day by a number of eminent clinicians who are experts in their field, demonstrating how the multidisciplinary team can improve the care of patients with allergic disease.
Programmes for Nurses and Health Visitors will run in parallel and have been grouped into themes, allowing flexibility for delegates to choose the most appropriate session for their practice. The nurses programme includes practical sessions covering the administration of immunotherapy, skin prick and intradermal testing and the popular ‘management of an allergic reaction’ practical session.
This study day will be valuable to you if you would like to know more about this client group as it will provide an introduction to allergic disease and its management. You will gain an understanding of the basic immunology of allergy and the practical value of clinical investigations in relation to allergic disease.
The primary aims of the day are to provide:
An awareness of the appropriate clinical investigations to confirm a diagnosis. The principles of managing a patient with allergic disease such as dietary exclusion, adrenaline auto-injector training and pharmacological management of an allergic reaction. An understanding of the requirements of the safe environment needed for carrying out diagnostic tests and administering immunotherapy. An introduction to drug allergy and immunotherapy.

Anaphylaxis and Drug Allergy Update Seminar 2011
A one day seminar for clinicians who treat patients with Drug Allergy and Anaphylaxis
Thursday 31st March 2011 • Governors Hall, St Thomas’ Hospital, London
- Anaphylaxis: There are many potential causes of Anaphylaxis. Whilst most triggers are easily identified e.g. nuts, there are many reactions for which a trigger is more difficult to identify. This seminar aims to cover recent advances in our understanding of both typical, and less typical anaphylactic presentations. In particular we will focus on Food-Dependent Exercise-Induced Anaphylaxis, Exercise-Induced Anaphylaxis and finally, Idiopathic Anaphylaxis. The Seminar will be practically focused and led by practicing doctors considered to be International experts in their specific topic.

ADR of an allergic nature constitute a significant work load for the practicing allergy specialist. This seminar will pick up on the tradition of previous Allergy Academy Drug Allergy Seminars, by covering common clinical presentations in a clinically-focused and interactive manner. The Seminar will be led by practicing doctors considered to be International experts in their specific topic; topics will include more common clinical presentations such as reactions at the time of General Anaesthesia and following Beta-Lactam administration.
Audience: The seminar is designed for clinicians who frequently manage patients presenting with one or both of the above disorders. The seminar will be presented at a specialist level and will focus on the diagnosis, investigation and management of these conditions. Allergy for Pharmacists,
Tuesday 4th October 2011
Allergy Academy are very excited to announce their first ever study day for pharmacists. Allergic disease has increased dramatically over the last 20 to 30 years. It is a multi-system illness including food allergy, eczema, allergic rhinitis and asthma. It is crucial that community pharmacists are equipped to manage this tidal-wave of allergies, as an essential front-line service for patients.
This day will take a very practical look at the community-based, pharmaceutical management of an extensive range of allergic diseases with the aim of increasing knowledge and confidence when advising patients in a pharmacy setting. A variety of interactive talks, as well as hands-on, practical break-out sessions, will be delivered by some of the UK’s leading pharmaceutical and allergy experts.
“Immunotherapy in Clinical Practice”,
Tuesday 11th October, St Thomas’ Hospital
Allergen immunotherapy has now been around for 100 years! However, it still represents one of the most exciting areas in the field of allergy at present. Doctors now have the potential to give their patients access to both subcutaneous and sublingual desensitisation products for different pollens, insect venoms and a number of non pollen allergens. Unfortunately service provision for allergy immunotherapy in the UK still lags considerably behind that of other parts of Europe. This day will be built on last year’s highly successful event and will draw together some of the world’s leading expects in the field.
This interactive morning session will see the group split into adult and paediatric groups for a highly practical session on delivery of both subcutaneous and sublingual immunotherapy with the aim of helping doctors develop the skills and confidence needed to start bringing these treatments into their clinical practice. A case based discussion will tie all of the practical information together. We will also discuss the practicalities of commissioning for immunotherapy. Places will be limited to ensure small group interactivity.
There is also an afternoon programme “Immunotherapy – The Cutting Edge” which will be an exciting look at the future of immunotherapy. Delegates can choose to attend the whole day or either half day.
