Practical Allergy in Primary Care
(in partnership with Allergy UK)

Date: Wednesday, 5th May 2010
Audience: GPs

In the 2006 Department of Health publication –‘A review of services for allergy’ it was stated that ‘the importance of GPs and others in primary care having sufficient clinical knowledge and support systems to spot allergy in the early stages...will be key to making best use of available specialist resources’ (section 6.9). It later adds that ‘responsibility for ensuring that patient’s needs are met lies with local commissioners’ (section 6.13). These workshop style sessions will be organised in partnership with PCTs in order to fill the information gap in primary care. They will focus on recognition of allergy in adults and children and its first line management in a primary care setting. It will also focus on recognition of patients who could benefit from specialist referral and on raising awareness of new treatments that patients may benefit from.

Practical Paediatric Allergy

Date: Monday, 8th March – Wednesday 10th March 2010
Audience: Allergy Specialists, Dieticians, GPs, Hospital Doctors, Nurses, Paediatricians

This three day intensive course is now in its third year having run since 2008 with considerable success.  This is the only course of its kind, designed for clinicians who work with allergic children but have not been able to access formal education or training. The primary aims of the course are to provide:
• an introduction to the immunology of allergy with emphasis on clinical relevance
• an understanding of the spectrum of childhood allergic disease and its presentation
• evidence-based strategies for diagnosis & treatment
• demonstrations of practical skills such as allergy testing and provocation challenges
• a foundation for clinical research or service development

This course receives CPD accreditation from the RCPCH and is endorsed by both BSACI and EAACI.

Adverse Reactions to Vaccines Seminar

Date:  Thursday, 11th March 2010
Audience: The seminar will be presented at a professional i.e. medical level and will be suitable for Doctors and Nurses who practice in the field of Child health.

Since Dr Edward Jenner's first use of the smallpox vaccination in 1796 there have been many advances in both the science and provision of vaccination. Indeed, the discovery of Immunisation has significantly improved child health and Immunisation remains a basic human right. All children should therefore have access to effective and safe vaccines.

Vaccine safety remains a major concern to Health Professionals and the public at large.  The Allergy Academy is therefore delighted to be hosting this Seminar in conjunction with our Paediatric Infectious Disease Colleagues.

The aim of the Adverse Vaccine Reaction Seminar is to:
• Provide an overview of advances in the safety of vaccines
• Detail both perceived and real risks associated with contemporary vaccines and vaccine components such as; Gelatin, Neomycin, Egg, Aluminum and Thiamersol.
• Describe techniques for vaccine administration to patients at increased risk of adverse reactions such as the allergic or immunocompromised patient
• Cover alternative approaches and attitudes to vaccination
• Address media coverage of vaccine safety controversies
The above clinical issues will be addressed in an interactive manner by leaders in the field.

This course has been accredited with 4 CPD points
